Church of Oprah

April 26, 2008

If you haven’t heard about what she is doing check this out

These are some of the exercises that help you incorporate “The New Earth” into your life:

  • Every time you walk up and down the stairs in your house or place of work, pay close attention to every step, every movement…even your breathing. Be totally present.
  • When you wash your hands, pay attention to all the sensory perceptions associated with the activity: the sound and feel of the water, the movement of your hands, the scent of the soap and so on.
  • When you get into your car, after you close the door, pause for a few seconds and observe the flow of your breath. Become aware of a silent but powerful sense of presence.

Oprah has said on her show that there are many ways to heaven and that the cross is something for us to overcome. I agree that we should take the time to be aware of the things around us.  We should not take for granted the simple things of life, because they point to the beauty that God has created.  But Oprah and Eckhart Tolle are leading people to emptiness and toward a path of destruction.

Let’s imagine a bride walking down the aisle.  She takes her time, breathing in and out. She notices ever part of her dress, every person seated in the pews, and every feeling she is experiencing at that moment. Everything is beautiful. It is the moment she has waited for all her life. There’s just one thing….there’s no groom.  Pretty pointless isn’t it.  Jesus is the perfect groom, coming back for his bride (the Church).  He is the only thing.  Everything comes from Him, is for Him, and holds together because of Him.

Jesus is the only way. Don’t let Oprah or anyone else try to convince you otherwise.  Yes, God has created a beautiful Earth for us to appreciate, but it is fallen creation just like us.  Cling to the cross and nothing else.

Crazy Love

April 16, 2008

Francis Chan has finally written a book.  It’s called Crazy Love. Go read the first chapter at    The book doesn’t come out for a another month, but I highly highly recommend that you get it. If you haven’t heard about him, he is changing this world.  He is just a pastor in Simi Valley, CA, but now is speaking at all of Passion’s events.  They are even taking him on their World Tour. I take credit for this book by the way.  I emailed him 3 years ago and told him to write a book.  He told me he didn’t like to write, but obviously he took my advice.

Quiet You with My Love

April 11, 2008

If you know me at all you know that I love babies.  Whenever there is one around, I have to take a turn holding them.  It’s kind of funny thing that such a large dude (6’7″ 215 pounds) becomes a puddle of goo with a little 4 month old.  Last night I got to hang with two babies, Juliet and Caleb.  What a great night it was. Caleb had some issues later in the night, when mom and dad left him in the care of his grandma for about an hour and a half.  She is an amazing grandma visiting from Texas, but Caleb continued to cry for about an hour.

I gave Grandma Emmit a rest and told her I would take a shot at getting him to stop crying.  I held him for a few minutes, bouncing him up and down, but he continued to cry.  I then started rubbing his back, praying over him, and started to sing to him.  “Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so. Little ones to him belong, they are weak but He is strong.” I continued to sing, “Jesus loves you Caleb.” All of a sudden he stopped crying and began to fall asleep.  It was truly awesome.  It reminded me of Zephaniah 3:17.  “The LORD your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing.”  It is so awesome to remember that God does not sit in heaven striking us down whenvever we mess up.  He delights in us.  When we are crying out to him in pain, He is quieting our hearts with His love, and rejoicing over us with singing.  I can’t wait until I have kids.  I think then I will have a better understanding of how much God loves us.

Clarity vs. Trust

April 9, 2008

I often ask God what he wants me to do and what are the steps I need to take.  It would be so easy (and awesome in my opinion) for God to just email the next things He wants me to do.  Brennan Manning shares this story that helps me when I don’t know what to do.

“When John Kavanaugh, the noted and famous ethicist, went to Calcutta, he was seeking Mother Teresa … and more. He went for three months to work at “the house of the dying” to find out how best he could spend the rest of his life.

When he met Mother Teresa, he asked her to pray for him. “What do you want me to pray for?” she replied. He then uttered the request he had carried thousands of miles: “Clarity. Pray that I have clarity.”

“No,” Mother Teresa answered, “I will not do that.” When he asked her why, she said, “Clarity is the last thing you are clinging to and must let go of.” When Kavanaugh said that she always seemed to have clarity, the very kind of clarity he was looking for, Mother Teresa laughed and said: “I have never had clarity; what I have always had is trust. So I will pray that you trust God.”

This story is really helping me to not always pray to God for answers, but to cling to Him, because He is the Answer.  This seems pretty basic, but is very profound in my opinion. I pray that YOU would trust God.
